True RMS meters measure non-sinusoidal AC (from motors, dimmers, electronics) accurately, while average-responding meters can read low. If you work with electronics or variable loads, True RMS is worth it.

Auto-ranging automatically picks the correct measurement scale, so you just choose voltage, current or resistance and read. It is simpler for beginners; manual ranging gives faster repeated readings once you know your range.

The CAT (I–IV) rating shows the maximum transient energy a meter can safely handle. Higher categories suit mains and distribution work. Always match the rating to your job and use fused, intact test leads.

Set the meter to DC voltage, touch red to + and black to −, and read the value. Compare it to the rated voltage; a much lower reading under load means the battery is weak. See more in Power & Cables.

'OL' (overload) means the value is above the selected range, or in resistance mode it means an open circuit / no continuity. Switch to a higher range or check your connection. It is a normal indicator, not a fault.
