PVC electrical tape uses a pressure-sensitive adhesive to stick to surfaces and is the standard choice for most indoor wiring tasks. Self-amalgamating tape has no adhesive — it fuses to itself when stretched and overlapped, creating a seamless, waterproof, airtight seal ideal for outdoor or underground joints.

Standard PVC tape is not recommended for permanently outdoor or underground applications as moisture and UV can degrade the adhesive over time. For standard 230V domestic wiring in Greece and across Europe, look for PVC electrical tape rated at least 600V or 1000V (marked as 600 V or 1 kV on the packaging). A higher voltage rating provides an additional safety margin and is the same tape professionals use in commercial installations.

In European wiring practice, brown indicates the live (phase) conductor, blue is neutral, and green/yellow is earth. Additional colours such as black, red, grey and white are used for multi-phase systems and secondary identification. Using the correct colour-coding makes future maintenance safer and is required in professional installations.

For a secure, well-insulated splice, apply at least two to three overlapping layers of PVC tape, each layer wrapped at a 50% overlap to eliminate gaps. The total thickness should at least match the original cable insulation. For critical or outdoor joints, self-amalgamating tape followed by a layer of PVC tape provides extra protection.

Yes, PVC electrical tape is often used for bundling cables in harnesses and loom wiring. However, for cable management over longer runs, cable ties are generally faster and more reliable. A combination of both — ties for structure, tape for identification — works well in panel and harness applications.
