An MCB (miniature circuit breaker) protects a circuit against overload and short-circuit currents — it trips when the current exceeds the rated amperage. An RCCB (residual current circuit breaker) protects against earth-leakage faults and electric shock — it trips when it detects an imbalance between live and neutral current, even at very low fault levels (e.g. 30 mA). For personal protection in domestic circuits (bathrooms, kitchens, garden sockets), a 30 mA RCCB is the standard requirement under most European electrical regulations. For fire protection on larger distribution circuits where nuisance tripping is a concern, 100 mA or 300 mA devices are used. A 2-pole RCCB is used in single-phase installations (standard in most homes) — it monitors the live (L) and neutral (N) conductors. A 4-pole RCCB is required for three-phase installations (3L + N), which are common in commercial premises, workshops, and for large three-phase appliances. Nuisance tripping can be caused by natural capacitive leakage in long cable runs, certain types of appliances (particularly those with switch-mode power supplies or motors), or accumulated leakage across many circuits on a single RCCB. Solutions include using a higher-sensitivity RCCB (e.g. upgrading from 30 mA to 100 mA on distribution circuits), splitting loads across multiple RCCBs, or investigating specific appliances that may have degraded insulation. All RCCBs have a built-in test button — pressing it simulates a fault current and should cause the device to trip immediately. This test should be carried out regularly (at least every 6 months) to confirm the mechanism hasn't seized. If the RCCB does not trip when the test button is pressed, the device is faulty and should be replaced. Never rely on a failed RCCB for protection. No — an RCCB is specifically designed to detect earth-leakage (residual current) faults. It will not protect against overload currents or short circuits between live and neutral (that is the role of an MCB or fuse).
