XLR Connectors for Balanced Audio & PA
XLR connectors are the professional standard for balanced audio signal transmission — found on microphones, mixing desks, power amplifiers, stage monitors, direct boxes and a wide range of broadcast and recording equipment. Their three-pin design carries a balanced (differential) signal that rejects common-mode interference over long cable runs, making XLR the go-to choice anywhere noise rejection matters: live stages, recording studios, broadcast facilities and installed AV systems. At Lynk.gr we stock a carefully selected range of XLR connectors covering the most common configurations for both assembly and replacement work.
XLR Connector Types: Male, Female and Panel-Mount
XLR connectors come in cable-mount and panel-mount (chassis) versions, each in male and female variants. The male XLR (pins protruding) is typically fitted to the cable end carrying signal out of a device; the female XLR (pins recessed in sockets) is typically the input. Panel-mount versions are used to build rear-panel connectors into equipment enclosures, stage boxes and wall plates. Three-pin XLR is by far the most common for audio; five-pin versions are used for DMX lighting control and some stereo or AES3 applications.
Construction Quality and Wiring Tips
For professional use, look for connectors with solid metal shell bodies, positive-locking mechanisms and clearly numbered contact pins. Solder-type contacts provide the most reliable connection when assembled correctly; ensure the cable's shield braid is dressed neatly and soldered to pin 1 (earth/ground). The hot (positive) signal goes to pin 2 and the cold (negative/return) to pin 3 — following the standard IEC 60268-12 convention. Strain relief must be correctly tightened onto the cable jacket, not the core wires. For related audio connectors, see RCA & 3.5mm Jack Connectors and F-Type, BNC & Coaxial Connectors.
Applications: From Stage to Studio
XLR connections are essential wherever balanced audio runs over more than a few metres. Microphone cables, speaker lines from amplifiers to passive cabinets, AES/EBU digital audio, DMX512 lighting control and inter-rack patching all rely on XLR. For permanent installed AV systems — conference rooms, houses of worship, education facilities — panel-mount XLR connectors on wall plates and equipment racks provide neat, durable termination points. Pair with Ring Terminals and Spade Terminals for power-side connections in the same installation. Find more in our Connectors & Terminals range.
