A rack PDU (Power Distribution Unit) is a purpose-built power strip designed to mount inside a standard 19-inch server rack or network cabinet. Unlike a domestic power strip, rack PDUs use industrial IEC outlets suited to server and networking equipment, are rated for continuous high loads, and often include surge protection, metering or remote switching. Add up the maximum power draw (in watts) of all equipment you plan to connect, then divide by your supply voltage (230 V in Greece) to get the amperage. As a rule of thumb, never exceed 80% of the PDU's rated current to avoid tripping the circuit breaker under peak load. Count the IEC inlet types of your equipment to confirm outlet compatibility, and add a few spare outlets for future expansion. A metered PDU includes a current meter — usually an LED display on the unit — so you can see total load in real time without logging in to anything. A switched PDU goes further, allowing each outlet (or groups of outlets) to be turned on or off remotely, which is invaluable for rebooting a hung server without a physical visit. Many units combine both functions. If your priority is budget monitoring of a growing rack, a metered unit is a cost-effective start; if you manage equipment across multiple sites, switched or managed PDUs are worth the investment.

Yes, and this is the standard data-centre approach: the UPS provides battery backup and power conditioning on its output, and the rack PDU distributes that protected power to individual equipment. Make sure the PDU's input amperage rating is equal to or greater than the UPS output, and match the inlet type (the PDU's IEC C14 or C20 inlet to the UPS's corresponding outlet). Horizontal PDUs mount in standard rack units (1U or 2U) at the front or rear of the rack, making them easy to access but consuming valuable rack space. Zero-U (vertical) PDUs mount in the side channels or vertical cable management slots of the cabinet, so they take up no rack unit space at all — ideal for dense environments where every U counts. Zero-U units typically have more outlets and longer bodies. The choice depends on your cabinet design and available mounting points.

Some do, but not all. Basic passthrough PDUs have no surge suppression — the assumption is that upstream protection (a UPS or a dedicated voltage stabilizer) handles that. PDUs marketed as having built-in surge protection include MOV-based or SPD (Surge Protective Device) circuits. If your installation does not include a UPS, pairing a surge-protected PDU with a Voltage Stabilizer is a cost-effective way to protect sensitive equipment from mains disturbances.
