Thicker gauge cables carry more current and start larger engines, including diesels. Small petrol cars manage with lighter sets. When unsure, choose the heavier option so you're covered for cold starts and bigger vehicles.

Attach positive to positive, then negative on the donor battery and a clean metal ground on the dead car. Start the donor, then the dead vehicle, and disconnect in reverse. Always check your vehicle manual first.

Longer cables help when cars can't park close, but they add a little resistance. Pairing extra length with a thicker gauge keeps current strong. For most drivers a medium length with heavy gauge is the sweet spot.

Connected correctly and in the right order, quality cables are safe. Reversing polarity or sparking near the battery is what causes damage, so follow the sequence and keep the final ground away from the battery terminals.

Store them dry and coiled loosely to avoid kinks, and wipe the clamps clean if they pick up grime. Check for corrosion occasionally so the contact stays solid when you need a start.
