For standard lighting circuits a 1.5 mm² conductor is typical, while power socket circuits commonly use 2.5 mm². Larger loads such as cookers or electric showers require heavier cross-sections. Some installation wires carry ratings suitable for outdoor use when protected inside conduit, but bare installation wire without UV-resistant or waterproof insulation should not be exposed to the elements. Solid wire has a single conductor and is stiffer, making it easier to push through conduit but less suited to repeated flexing.
