A satellite dish actuator is a motorised linear arm mounted between your dish and its polar or H-H mount. When the DVB-S2 receiver sends a DiSEqC 1.2 or USALS command, the motor extends or retracts to rotate the dish along the Clarke Belt satellite arc, locking onto each satellite in turn.

Match the actuator's stroke length to the distance your mount requires, and check the thrust rating (kg) against your dish size. Compact 36V actuators typically suit dishes up to 90 cm, while dishes 1.2 m and larger need heavy-duty units with greater thrust. Always verify compatibility with your mounting hardware before ordering.

Yes. To control a dish actuator automatically, your receiver must support DiSEqC 1.2 (step-by-step positioning) or USALS (automatic arc tracking using your GPS coordinates). Most modern DVB-S2 receivers include at least one of these protocols — check the spec sheet before purchasing a motor.

Most actuators use standard mounting dimensions (typically 19 mm round or square tube) and are compatible with a wide range of dish brands. The key requirement is a polar or H-H mount — standard fixed or offset-arm mounts don't rotate. Check that your satellite dish mounting bracket is designed for motorised use before fitting an actuator.

First set the mount's latitude angle equal to your geographic latitude. Then point the polar axis true north (not magnetic north) and fine-tune declination until the dish arc tracks the Clarke Belt. Use a known reference satellite at your local meridian to verify. Once aligned, use your receiver's DiSEqC motor menu to step across the arc and save satellite positions. Quality power cables with adequate gauge prevent voltage drop to the motor.

Most actuators have an internal hall-effect sensor or reed switch that counts pulses to track position. If power is interrupted, the stored position count in the receiver may be out of sync with the physical dish position. You'll need to re-run the motor setup in your receiver to re-reference positions. Using a quality power supply and cabling minimises the risk of unexpected interruptions.
