Ferrules are designed for stranded (multi-core) conductors and are generally not necessary or recommended for solid single-core wire, which already provides a firm, uniform tip. Applying a ferrule to solid wire can actually reduce contact area in the terminal. If you are working with both wire types in the same panel, use ferrules only on the stranded conductors.

A dedicated ferrule crimping tool is essential — standard pliers are not suitable as they apply uneven force and produce an unreliable crimp. Ratchet-type ferrule crimpers are the professional choice: they only release when the correct crimping force has been reached, guaranteeing a consistent result every time. Match the crimping die size to the ferrule cross-section for best results.

Match the ferrule cross-section (in mm²) exactly to the conductor's rated cross-section. The standard colour coding (DIN 46228) makes size identification quick: red = 1.0 mm², blue = 1.5 mm², grey = 2.5 mm², and so on. The sleeve length should correspond to the terminal's clamping depth. TWIN ferrules (also called double-entry or duo ferrules) have a single crimping sleeve that accommodates two conductors side by side, feeding both into one terminal position. This is useful in panel wiring where you need to connect two circuits at the same terminal point without using a bridge or parallel connector. They are available in the same standard cross-sections as single ferrules and are colour-coded for easy identification.

No — wire ferrules are single-use items. Once crimped, the metal sleeve is permanently deformed around the conductor strands. Removing the conductor from the terminal and re-inserting it is fine (the ferrule stays on the wire), but a ferrule that has been cut off or heavily distorted should be replaced with a new one.
