Flexible cables use finely stranded copper conductors (Class 5 or 6) that can bend thousands of times without breaking, while standard rigid cables use fewer, thicker strands suited to fixed installations. It depends on the outer sheath. Standard PVC-sheathed cables are rated for indoor or sheltered use. For outdoor applications, look for cables with rubber (H07RN-F) or thermoplastic elastomer sheaths rated for UV exposure and moisture. These are harmonised European designation codes. H = harmonised standard, 05/07 = voltage rating (300/500 V or 450/750 V), V = PVC insulation, R = rubber insulation, N = polychloroprene sheath, F = finely stranded (flexible) conductor. So H05VV-F is a PVC-insulated flexible cable for light duty, while H07RN-F is a rubber-sheathed flexible cable for tough environments. Flexible cables are designed for movable connections and appliance leads, not typically for concealed fixed wiring behind walls or in conduits where solid or rigid-stranded cables are the standard. The safest method is to use a properly rated extension lead or junction box with adequate current capacity — never just twist wires together and wrap with tape.
