The most common cable for wired burglar alarm sensors — such as door contacts, window contacts and PIR motion detectors — is a 4-conductor or 6-conductor security cable in 22 AWG. The low current draw of these devices means 22 AWG is sufficient for most residential and small commercial runs. For longer cable runs or higher-current devices like sirens, 18 AWG is the preferred gauge.

RG59 is the traditional choice for analogue CCTV installations and is often supplied as Siamese cable with an integrated 18 AWG power pair. It works well for runs up to around 300 metres at standard definition. RG6 has a thicker centre conductor and better shielding, making it more suitable for longer runs and for HD-over-coax formats such as HD-TVI and AHD, where higher frequencies demand lower signal loss. For most standard installations RG59 Siamese is the practical and cost-effective option.

Yes. IP cameras that support PoE (Power over Ethernet) receive both data and power through a single Cat5e or Cat6 cable connected to a PoE switch or PoE injector. Standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) delivers up to 15.4 W per port, while PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at) delivers up to 30 W for cameras with heaters, pan-tilt-zoom motors or powerful IR illuminators. Cat5e supports runs up to 100 metres; Cat6 offers better performance at the same distance and is recommended for new installations.

The correct gauge depends on two factors: the current the device draws and the length of the cable run. As a general rule, 22 AWG is adequate for low-current sensors and detectors drawing under 100 mA over short runs. For sirens, access-control readers and alarm panels that draw several hundred milliamps to a few amps, 18 AWG is the standard choice. Longer cable runs require a heavier gauge to limit voltage drop — a useful rule of thumb is to check that the voltage at the device stays within ±10% of the rated supply voltage.

Yes, for any cable that will be exposed to direct sunlight, a UV-resistant outer jacket is strongly recommended. Standard PVC insulation degrades under prolonged UV exposure, becoming brittle and cracking, which can cause short circuits or open circuits over time. UV-resistant cable maintains its flexibility and insulation integrity for many years outdoors. If the cable runs inside conduit on external walls you have more flexibility, but a UV-resistant grade is always the safer long-term choice for Greek climate conditions.

Alarm control panels typically require 6-conductor cable as a minimum — to carry power, ground, data and zone connections between the panel and keypads or expanders. More complex panels or those with additional zone connections may need 8-conductor or 10-conductor cable. Always consult the installation manual for your specific panel to determine the exact conductor count and gauge required; some manufacturers also specify whether shielded cable is needed to reduce interference.
