A capacitor stores electrical charge and releases it when needed, used for filtering, smoothing power and providing the phase shift motors need to run. The right type depends on your application, from electronics to motor capacitors.

Capacitors are marked with their capacitance (µF, nF or pF) and a voltage rating. Match the capacitance exactly and use an equal or higher voltage. If unsure, compare against the original part before ordering.

Single-phase motors typically use a run capacitor for continuous operation and sometimes a start capacitor for extra startup torque. See Motor Run Capacitors and Motor Start Capacitors.

Electrolytic (DC) capacitors are polarised and must be connected the right way round. Motor and AC capacitors are non-polarised. Always follow the markings and wiring diagram, and check connectors in Power & Cables.

For motors, keep the same µF value and equal or higher voltage. In electronics small tolerances are normal, but big changes can affect operation. When in doubt, match the original part exactly.
