An HDMI splitter sends one input to multiple outputs — all displaying the same source. An HDMI matrix switch has multiple inputs and multiple outputs, and can independently route any input to any output simultaneously. An HDMI modulator converts an HDMI signal into an RF (coaxial) broadcast channel, so it can be distributed over existing coaxial cable infrastructure to standard TVs. You need one when you want to share a single HDMI source (such as a set-top box, media player or security camera feed) with multiple TVs in different rooms without running new HDMI cables — common in hotels, hospitals and multi-room home setups.

Many modern HDMI matrix switches support 4K UHD (3840×2160) at 60Hz, and some also support HDR, HDCP 2.2 and ARC (Audio Return Channel). Always check the product specifications for the exact supported resolutions, refresh rates and HDCP version, especially if you are using 4K streaming services or 4K Blu-ray sources, which require HDCP 2.2 compliance throughout the signal chain.

Control options vary by model. Entry-level matrices typically include a front-panel button and IR remote. Higher-end units add RS-232 serial control, TCP/IP network control or a companion mobile app, making them suitable for integration into smart home or commercial AV control systems. Standard HDMI matrices output to HDMI cables, which reliably carry 4K signals up to around 5–10 metres. For longer distances, combine the matrix with HDMI extenders that use Cat6 network cable or fibre optic to reach up to 100 m or more per run. Some HDMI matrices include audio de-embedding, which extracts the audio from the HDMI signal and outputs it via a separate analogue or digital audio port.
