The EL surge arrester uses a semi-conductor valve element that opens under defined overvoltage conditions. In normal operation it presents infinitely high resistance between protected conductors and the earthing circuit. When voltage rises due to lightning or system faults, the valve element opens and diverts the excess voltage to ground, then closes once normal voltage returns.

The arrester withstands high momentary overloading and is intended for systems with high or average overvoltage risk. It is fitted at the start of the installation or before the main breaker. A certified electrician is required for safe installation.
