A metal halide lamp is a high-intensity discharge (HID) light source that produces bright white light with high colour rendering. It is widely used in stadium and sports floodlighting, large retail stores, warehouses, high-bay industrial facilities, car parks and outdoor architectural lighting where high output and accurate colour reproduction are required.

Metal halide lamps produce a white light with a colour rendering index (CRI) of 80–95, which means colours appear natural and accurate. High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are more efficient but emit a yellow-orange light with a low CRI (around 25), making them less suitable where colour accuracy matters, such as retail, sports or display applications.

Yes. Metal halide lamps cannot operate directly from the mains supply. They require a ballast (magnetic or electronic) to regulate the current and, for most types, an ignitor to start the arc. Always check that the ballast wattage exactly matches the lamp, and verify whether your luminaire has an integrated or separate ignitor before ordering.

Metal halide lamps need a warm-up period of 2–5 minutes after switching on for the arc tube to reach operating temperature and the metal halide salts to vaporise fully. During this time light output and colour gradually stabilise. If the lamp is switched off while hot, it cannot restart immediately — a cool-down period of several minutes is required before re-striking.

Common cap types include E27 (standard Edison screw) for lower-wattage lamps, E40 (Goliath Edison screw) for higher-wattage types used in large luminaires, and double-ended types such as RX7s and PGZ12 used in compact floodlights and projectors. Always check your existing lamp or fitting data sheet for the exact cap type before ordering a replacement.
