JST (Japan Solderless Terminal) connectors are a family of small, low-voltage electrical connectors widely used in consumer electronics, robotics, RC vehicles, battery packs and PCB assemblies. Each series is defined by the pitch (pin spacing) between its contacts and features a positive-locking plastic housing to prevent accidental disconnection.

The main difference is pin pitch. JST PH has a 2.0 mm pitch and is commonly found in LiPo battery packs and compact PCBs. JST XH has a 2.5 mm pitch and is used in larger consumer electronics, RC receivers and sensors. JST ZH has a 1.5 mm pitch for miniaturised boards and tight-space applications. Housings from different series are not interchangeable, so always confirm which series your board or battery uses before ordering.

Yes. JST PH 2.0 mm connectors are the de facto standard for small LiPo and Li-ion battery packs used in RC models, drones, robotics and portable electronics. The connector's current rating must match or exceed the peak discharge current of your battery — check the product datasheet for the rated amperage of each series before use. For high-drain applications, a heavier-gauge connector series may be more appropriate.

Yes, a proper ratchet crimping tool sized for the JST contact series is strongly recommended. Using the wrong tool or improvising with pliers usually produces an unreliable crimp that can fail intermittently or pull out under tension. Many hobbyists use an Engineer PA-09 or similar precision crimp tool. Pre-crimped wire assemblies are also available in this range and save time when you do not need custom wire lengths.

Absolutely. JST XH 2.5 mm and JST PH 2.0 mm connectors are popular choices for wiring sensors, displays, motors and power connections on Arduino and Raspberry Pi boards. Many breakout boards and HATs ship with JST sockets. Using JST connectors instead of bare soldered wires makes your project easier to disassemble, reconfigure and repair.

The most reliable method is to measure the centre-to-centre distance between two adjacent pins on the existing connector with a digital calliper. A 1.5 mm measurement indicates ZH, 2.0 mm indicates PH, and 2.5 mm indicates XH or EH. You can also check the device's schematic or service manual, which will typically list the connector part number. When in doubt, count the pins and note the housing dimensions for comparison with product listings.
