Auto-ranging meters pick the correct scale for you, which is faster and beginner-friendly. Manual-ranging meters let experienced users lock a range for repeated readings and can respond quicker. For most users, auto-ranging is the more convenient everyday choice.

The CAT (category) rating shows how much transient voltage a meter can safely handle. CAT II suits appliances and electronics, while CAT III and IV are for fixed installations and mains distribution. If you work on household wiring, choose a meter with an appropriate CAT rating and quality leads.

Set the meter to the continuity mode (often marked with a sound-wave symbol), touch the two probes to the points you want to check, and listen for the beep. A beep means the path is connected. It is a quick way to find broken wires, blown fuses and bad joints.

True-RMS meters measure AC accurately even when the waveform is not a clean sine wave, which is common with motors, dimmers and electronic loads. If you only measure simple mains and batteries, a standard meter is fine; for modern electronics, true-RMS gives more reliable readings.
