Yes. A bare LED needs a series resistor sized to your supply voltage and the LED's forward voltage and current, otherwise it can burn out. If you'd rather avoid this, choose a module with the resistor built in.

Use R = (supply voltage − LED forward voltage) ÷ LED current. For example, 12 V with a 2 V, 20 mA LED needs about 500 Ω. Pick the next standard value up. Find resistors and tools in Tools.

Yes. LEDs only conduct one way. The longer leg is the anode (+) and the shorter leg or flat edge is the cathode (−). Connect them correctly or the LED won't light. Check wiring help in Power & Cables.

Not safely without proper circuitry. Bare indicator LEDs are for low-voltage DC with a resistor. For mains panels, use a mains-rated LED Indicator Module designed for the job.

Red, green, amber, blue and white are widely available, plus bi-colour types. Use consistent colours for status (red stop, green run, amber warning) so panels are easy to read.
