USB Extension Cables: Buying Guide
A carefully selected range of USB extension cables lets you close the gap between any USB port and the device that needs to reach it — without hubs, dongles or rearranging furniture. Whether you need an extra metre for a keyboard on a standing desk, a longer run to a scanner in a corner office or a high-power extension for a USB charger, you will find the right cable here.
USB-A vs USB-C extension cables
USB-A extensions use the classic rectangular connector and are compatible with the vast majority of existing peripherals — keyboards, mice, flash drives, webcams and more. USB-C extensions accommodate newer devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops and modern hubs. Both types are available in passive (up to 5m) and active/repeater variants for longer runs. Always check that the cable's rated speed (USB 2.0 or USB 3.x) matches the throughput your device needs.
Passive vs active (repeater) cables
Passive cables carry the signal without amplification and work reliably up to around 3–5m. Beyond that, signal degradation can cause devices to disconnect or transfer speeds to drop. Active repeater cables include a built-in amplifier chip that regenerates the signal, maintaining reliable data transfer and power delivery over runs of 10m or more. For desk setups, a passive cable is usually sufficient; for AV or studio installations consider an active option.
Power delivery and charging
Not all USB extension cables support high-current charging. If you are extending a USB charger or powering a USB-powered device (a lamp, a fan or a small hub), look for a cable rated for the required current — typically 2A or higher for USB 3.x and USB-C Power Delivery extensions. Cable length and installation tips
Measure the actual run from port to device before ordering, allowing a little slack for a tidy cable path. For permanent under-desk or behind-panel runs, use cable management clips or trunking to keep things neat. Never exceed the maximum rated length for your USB standard without switching to an active cable, as doing so risks intermittent connections and data errors.
