Yes, but on steel doors a standard contact may behave inconsistently because metal affects the magnetic field. For these you should use contacts rated for metal surfaces, which include a spacer or wide gap design.

Most contacts list a working gap, often a few millimetres. Mount the magnet and switch so they sit close and aligned when the door is closed. A larger gap risks false triggers, so follow the product's stated spacing.
