A TS (Tip-Sleeve) cable carries a single unbalanced signal and is the standard for guitar and instrument connections. A TRS (Tip-Ring-Sleeve) cable adds a third conductor, allowing it to carry a balanced signal or a stereo signal. TRS is common for studio monitor connections, insert points and headphone outputs. Not directly — guitars use TS jack outputs, which are unbalanced. However, some active DI boxes and certain wireless systems accept an XLR output that can then connect to a mixer or interface. A balanced cable uses three conductors — two carrying the signal in opposite polarity plus a ground — so any interference picked up along the cable is cancelled out at the receiving end. An unbalanced cable uses two conductors and is more susceptible to hum and noise over longer runs. XLR and TRS cables are balanced; standard TS instrument cables are unbalanced.
