A snap-off (segmented) knife has a blade divided into scored sections — when the tip dulls, you snap off that segment with the built-in blade snapper to expose a fresh cutting edge, extending the life of each blade. A retractable utility knife uses a single solid blade that you push forward and lock at a chosen depth; when the blade is dull, you swap in a new one. Snap-off models are preferred for frequent fine cutting where a constantly sharp edge matters, while retractable models suit heavier-duty work where blade rigidity is more important.

They are also used for opening stretch-wrapped pallets and cutting strapping. The hooked profile keeps the cut controlled and consistent, and prevents accidental cuts through adjacent materials. Check that your utility knife handle accepts hook-blade inserts before purchasing — most standard 18 mm handles are compatible.

Blade life depends on the material being cut and the blade quality. Standard steel blades cutting cardboard or soft packaging may stay sharp through dozens of cuts; the same blade cutting fibre cement board or abrasive insulation can dull within a few passes. A dull blade is a safety risk — it requires more pressure, which increases the chance of slipping. As a rule: if you notice the blade tearing rather than slicing cleanly, change it. Bi-metal blades and titanium-coated blades last noticeably longer on tough materials and are worth the slight premium on heavy jobs.
