Photoelectric detectors are better at sensing slow, smouldering fires, while ionisation detectors respond faster to fast-flaming fires. For broad home protection, photoelectric units are a popular all-round choice.

Test the alarm with its button about once a month and change batteries when it chirps or at least yearly. Most detectors should be replaced after several years of use, so check the date printed on the unit.
