Most analogue CCTV cameras (AHD, TVI, CVI) operate on 12 V DC, while some dome cameras accept a wider range of 9–15 V DC. IP cameras can be powered either via a local 12 V DC adapter or using Power over Ethernet (PoE), which delivers both data and up to 15–30 W over a standard Ethernet cable. Always check the camera's datasheet before selecting a power supply to avoid under- or over-voltage damage.

Add up the rated current draw (in amps or milliamps) of every device you plan to connect — cameras, PTZ motors, IR illuminators, and any DVR or NVR if sharing the same supply. Then choose a power supply rated at least 20–30% above that total to ensure stable operation and avoid overloading. For example, if your cameras collectively draw 5 A, select a supply rated at 6–7 A. For large multi-camera sites, distribution boards that manage current per channel help protect individual cameras.

Standard CCTV power supplies do not provide battery backup. If uninterrupted recording is critical, pair your power supply with a UPS System to maintain power to cameras and the DVR/NVR during outages. Some security-grade power supplies include built-in battery charging circuits for connecting an external lead-acid battery, providing a cost-effective backup solution without a separate UPS unit.

The power supply itself is generally installed indoors or in a weatherproof enclosure — the DC cable then runs to the outdoor camera. When choosing a supply for outdoor camera systems, look for units with a wide operating temperature range, surge protection, and short-circuit protection per channel. Linear power supplies are simpler, quieter (no switching noise) and more tolerant of voltage fluctuations, but they are heavier and less efficient. Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) are compact, lightweight and highly efficient, making them the standard choice for modern CCTV installations where space and heat dissipation matter. Most security power supplies in our range are SMPS units with built-in protection features such as overvoltage, overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
