A contactor is an electromagnetic switch: energising its coil pulls the main contacts closed, allowing current to flow to a load like a motor or heater. Base your choice on the load's full-load current and its utilisation category, such as AC-3 for motors or AC-1 for resistive loads. Choosing a contactor rated above your load current ensures reliable switching and long contact life.
