UV-A (blacklight) lamps emit near-ultraviolet light that makes fluorescent materials glow; they are safe for normal use in entertainment, inspection and leak detection. UV-C germicidal lamps emit short-wave radiation that inactivates bacteria and viruses, but they are hazardous to skin and eyes and must never be used around people.

Blacklight UV-A lamps are used to verify banknotes and documents, detect leaks in air-conditioning and plumbing systems with fluorescent dye, cure UV-sensitive adhesives and gel coatings, and create glow effects in entertainment, events and escape rooms.

T8 tubes have a 26 mm diameter and are the most common type in offices, garages and shops, using a magnetic or electronic ballast. T5 tubes are slimmer at 16 mm and work only with electronic ballasts; they are more energy-efficient and suit modern batten and panel fittings. The two types are not interchangeable.

Magnetic ballast fittings use a starter to ignite the tube; when replacing the tube it is good practice to replace the starter at the same time. Electronic ballast fittings do not use a separate starter. Check your fitting type before ordering.
