The 'E' stands for Edison screw, and the number is the approximate cap diameter in millimetres. So E27 is a 27 mm screw base and E14 a 14 mm one — the two most common screw fittings.

Choose ceramic for high heat — halogen or high-wattage bulbs — because it resists temperature better. Plastic or bakelite holders are fine for standard LED and lower-wattage bulbs.

It varies by holder; each product lists a maximum wattage. Never exceed it, as overheating can damage the holder. With low-wattage LED bulbs this is rarely an issue.

Yes. As long as the cap type matches (e.g. E27 bulb in an E27 holder), LED bulbs work in standard holders and draw far less power, which keeps the holder cool.

Use correctly rated flex, secure the cord grip, and connect live, neutral and (where present) earth to the correct terminals. Get suitable cable from Power & Cables; if unsure, consult a qualified electrician.
