You are running Cat6 cable through a room and need to terminate it into a faceplate or patch panel. The keystone jack is where that cable ends, and picking the wrong one (or wiring it incorrectly) will cap your network at speeds far below what the cable itself can carry.
This guide covers the four decisions: which cable category you need, what the AWG gauge rating means for your specific cable, how toolless IDC termination works against a traditional punch-down tool, and which TIA wiring colour code to follow. Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A: which do you actually need?
The category of keystone you buy must match, or exceed, the category of cable you run. Installing a Cat5e jack at the end of a Cat6 cable limits the entire run to Cat5e performance, regardless of what is in the walls.
Cat6 is the current standard for new home and office installations. It handles Gigabit Ethernet comfortably and has headroom for the 2.5 Gbps speeds that newer Wi-Fi 6 access points and some workstations now negotiate. If your walls already have Cat6 cable, a Cat6 keystone is the correct match.
Cat6A is worth the step up only if you are running a 10 Gbps link at full channel length, or installing in an environment where extra interference rejection matters. The Techly IWP-MD C6A/UROTT is the Cat6A version of this same connector, using the same toolless mechanism and fitting the same faceplates.
How to read the AWG cable rating
AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. The number runs backwards: a higher number means a thinner wire. The IWP-MD C6/UROTT is rated for AWG 22-26 round cable.
AWG 23 solid-core conductor is the most common specification for Cat6 horizontal in-wall cabling, so it falls comfortably within that range. Check your cable's printed jacket specification before buying. If it lists AWG 23/1 or AWG 24/1 (the "/1" means solid core), you are in the supported range.
Stranded patch cable, typically AWG 26 or AWG 28, is designed for short runs between devices rather than in-wall termination. Do not use it in a fixed keystone run.
Toolless IDC vs punch-down: which termination method fits your job?
Traditional keystone jacks use IDC (insulation displacement connector) contacts that you press the cable conductors into with a punch-down tool. The tool strikes each wire into a slot, cuts the excess, and seats the contact in one motion. That process is reliable and fast if you are doing many jacks in one sitting.
Toolless jacks use the same IDC contact technology but remove the tool from the process. On the IWP-MD C6/UROTT, you lay each conductor into its colour-coded slot by hand and then turn the rotating button. The button presses all eight conductors in simultaneously and locks them in place.
Neither method produces a better cable connection; the contact physics are identical. The choice is about your situation. If you are doing a single wall point or working above a ceiling tile with no bench space, toolless is more practical. If you are populating a 24-port patch panel from scratch, a punch-down tool is faster per jack.
TIA 568A vs 568B: the one choice you must make consistently
The TIA 568 standard defines two valid wiring configurations for an RJ45 jack. Both work correctly at full Cat6 speed. The only rule is that you use the same one at both ends of every cable, and consistently across your whole installation.
568B is the more common choice in commercial cabling installations across Europe. If you are extending an existing network, check which colour code is already in use at the patch panel and replicate it at the new socket. The IWP-MD C6/UROTT has both 568A and 568B colour codes printed on the body, so you read the correct row and seat each wire without memorising anything.
One end wired 568A and the other 568B creates a crossover cable. It connects two computers directly but will not reach a switch or router.
PoE compatibility: what IEEE 802.3af means here
Power over Ethernet delivers electrical power down the same cable as network data, powering devices like access points, IP cameras, and VoIP phones directly from the switch. The IWP-MD C6/UROTT is rated for IEEE 802.3af, the PoE standard used by the majority of common PoE devices sold today.
No special action is needed at the keystone. Terminate the jack normally and the PoE power passes through the contacts automatically when a PoE switch or injector is connected. If you later add a PoE+ or PoE++ device, check the switch port specification; the keystone contacts pass whatever current the cable delivers.
Common mistakes
Leaving too much untwist before termination. Cat6 relies on the twist of each pair running right up to the contact. Unroll only as much conductor as you need to seat it; excess untwisted pair raises crosstalk at Gigabit speeds.
Forgetting to lock the button. The rotating button on toolless jacks can look optional. It is not. Turning it to the closed position is what drives the IDC contacts through the insulation and completes the termination. Without that step the wire is not connected at all.
Using the wrong category. Terminating Cat6A cable with a Cat6 jack limits the channel to Cat6 performance. Match the jack category to the cable or go higher, never lower.
