Motor Capacitors: Start & Run for Single-Phase Motors
A motor capacitor provides the phase shift a single-phase motor needs to start turning and to run efficiently. When a pump, compressor, fan or gate motor hums but will not start, or trips on overload, a failed capacitor is one of the most common causes. At Lynk we stock a carefully selected range of start and run capacitors across common µF and voltage ratings, so you can match the part already fitted to your motor.
Start vs run capacitors
Start capacitors give a short, high-capacitance boost during start-up and are switched out once the motor is up to speed. Run capacitors stay in circuit and improve efficiency and torque while running. Some motors use both; replace like for like.
Read the µF and voltage rating
The two key figures are capacitance in microfarads (µF) and the voltage rating (e.g. 400V or 450V). Match the µF exactly to the original and choose a voltage equal to or higher than the original. Never fit a lower voltage rating.
Terminals and mounting
Capacitors come with spade terminals or flying leads and may have a threaded stud or bracket for mounting. Check the body size so it fits the motor's terminal box. For switching and protection see contactors and relays.
