A downlight points straight down for general room lighting, while a spotlight is usually adjustable to aim light at a specific feature. Many fittings blur the line and do both.

GU10 fittings let you replace just the lamp when it fails, using bulbs from our LED Bulbs range. Integrated-LED units are slimmer and sealed, but you replace the whole fitting.

Each fitting lists a cut-out diameter and a required ceiling depth. Measure the available space above your ceiling and match both figures before you cut.

It depends on room size, ceiling height and the lumens per fitting. As a rough start, space them evenly and add up total lumens to match the brightness you'd expect from a panel or central fixture.

Near showers and baths you need a fitting with a suitable IP rating for moisture. Check each product's rating, and for exposed outdoor areas see Outdoor & Garden Lighting.

Only fittings or lamps marked dimmable can be dimmed, and they need a compatible dimmer. For GU10 versions, check the bulb spec in our LED Bulbs range.
