Motor Protection Switches – Overload & Short-Circuit Protection
Lynk.gr carries a carefully selected range of motor protection switches (also known as motor circuit breakers or PKZMs) that combine overload protection, short-circuit protection, and manual switching in a single compact device. They are a key component in any motor control panel for pumps, compressors, fans, and conveyor drives.
How Motor Protection Switches Work
A motor protection switch uses bimetallic strips to detect thermal overload and a magnetic trip for instantaneous short-circuit response. The adjustable current setting dial lets you match the trip threshold to the motor's rated current, protecting the winding from heat damage without nuisance tripping. Unlike a standard MCB circuit breaker, it is specifically calibrated for motor inrush characteristics.
Choosing the Right Rating
Select a switch whose adjustable range covers the motor's full-load current (FLC). For three-phase motors, verify the switch is rated for the appropriate voltage class. Always check the short-circuit breaking capacity (kA) is sufficient for your installation. If you need additional fault protection upstream, combine with Residual Current Devices (RCCB).
Installation and Panel Design
Motor protection switches mount on DIN rail and are typically wired in series before the motor contactor. Many models accept auxiliary contacts and signal modules for remote indication. For fuse-based backup protection, glass and cartridge fuses or thermal fuses may supplement protection in high-fault-level installations.
