For fine electronics and SMD work, choose 0.5–0.8 mm. For larger joints, wires and connectors, 1.0 mm or thicker is faster. Match it with the right soldering iron tip for clean results.

Leaded (Sn63/Pb37) melts at a lower temperature and flows easily, ideal for repairs and hobby work. Lead-free is RoHS-compliant and required for many professional jobs but needs a hotter soldering station.

For most jobs the rosin or no-clean flux core is enough. Extra flux helps on oxidized pads, large ground planes, or rework. It improves wetting so the joint forms faster and cleaner.

Leaded solder typically works around 320–350°C, lead-free around 350–380°C. Use the lowest temperature that gives a quick, shiny joint to protect the board. A controllable soldering iron helps.

A dull, grainy joint usually means it was moved while cooling (cold joint) or the temperature was too low. Reheat fully, let the solder flow, and keep parts still while it sets. A clean tip helps a lot.

Keep solder wire in a cool, dry place to prevent surface oxidation. Sealed or original packaging protects the flux core. Stored well, solder lasts for years without losing performance.
