CEE connectors use a standardised colour system defined by IEC 60309 to indicate voltage and phase: yellow for 110 V (extra-low voltage site supply), blue for 230 V single-phase, red for 400 V three-phase, and black for higher or DC voltages. This colour coding prevents accidental connection of equipment to an incompatible voltage, and the pin positions also vary by voltage so a blue plug cannot physically mate with a red socket.

Yes, provided the adapter is specifically designed to convert between 16 A and 32 A CEE connectors of the same voltage and phase. The 32 A socket can safely supply a 16 A load — the current rating of the socket is a maximum, not a fixed output. However, you must never use a 32 A adapter on a 16 A socket, as this would exceed the socket's rated capacity and create a fire risk. Always check that the adapter is rated for the full current your equipment draws.

IP44 means the connector is protected against solid objects larger than 1 mm and against water splashed from any direction — suitable for covered outdoor areas, temporary site work in light rain and workshop environments. IP67 means full dust-tight protection plus resistance to continuous immersion in water up to 1 m depth for 30 minutes, making it suitable for exposed outdoor locations, hosing-down environments and hire equipment that will see tough conditions. For permanent outdoor installations or any location subject to standing water, always choose IP67 or higher.

A three-phase 400 V (red CEE) supply provides 230 V between any single phase and neutral, so a correctly designed adapter can extract a single-phase 230 V feed from a three-phase socket. However, such adapters must be wired by a qualified electrician to ensure the correct phase, neutral and earth connections are made, as incorrect wiring can damage equipment or create a shock hazard. Do not attempt to improvise a three-phase to single-phase conversion without proper knowledge of the installation.

Industrial CEE adapters are specifically designed for demanding environments including construction sites, outdoor events and industrial workshops. The key requirement is to select the correct IP rating: use IP44 for protected outdoor areas and IP67 for fully exposed or wet locations. Always inspect the adapter before use for cracked housings, bent pins or damaged seals, and replace any damaged unit immediately. Do not use standard domestic plug adapters on site — they are not rated for the currents, weather exposure or mechanical stress of industrial use.
