An audio adapter is a small passive connector that bridges two different audio plug or socket types — for example, converting a 3.5mm stereo jack to a pair of RCA connectors, or a 6.35mm mono jack to a 3.5mm stereo socket. Adapters allow you to connect audio devices that use different connector standards without replacing cables, making them essential accessories for home audio, car audio, studio and live sound setups.

An analogue audio adapter is a purely passive connector that changes the physical plug shape without processing the signal — the audio remains in analogue form throughout. A DAC (digital-to-analogue converter) actively processes a digital audio stream (such as optical TOSLINK or coaxial S/PDIF) and converts it into an analogue audio signal that analogue amplifiers and speakers can use. DACs require power to operate, while passive adapters do not.

Yes. A 3.5mm stereo to dual RCA adapter (or a 3.5mm to 2x RCA cable) converts the headphone output of a phone, laptop or tablet to the left and right RCA line inputs of an amplifier or receiver. The signal levels are compatible as both are line-level or close to it, so no active electronics are required. Keep the volume on the source device at around 70–80% to minimise noise while maintaining a healthy signal level.

You need a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) that accepts an optical TOSLINK input and outputs analogue audio via RCA or 3.5mm connectors. These compact powered converters decode the PCM stereo digital signal from your TV and output it as a standard analogue audio signal. Connect the TV's optical output to the DAC's TOSLINK input, and the DAC's RCA outputs to the analogue inputs on your amplifier.

A good-quality passive audio adapter used within its specification introduces no audible degradation to the signal. Signal quality can be affected if there is a significant impedance mismatch between source and destination, if the adapter is used to connect mismatched signal levels (for example, a speaker-level output to a line-level input), or if a very low-quality adapter introduces contact resistance. Digital converters add an analogue-to-digital or digital-to-analogue conversion step, but modern converters in this category deliver transparent audio quality for home and studio use.

A balanced audio connection carries the signal on two conductors with opposite polarity plus a ground, allowing the receiving device to subtract interference that has been picked up equally on both signal conductors — this is called common-mode rejection. Balanced connections use XLR or TRS connectors and are standard in professional audio equipment. An unbalanced connection carries the signal on one conductor plus ground, using RCA (phono) or TS connectors. Unbalanced connections are fine for short cable runs in home audio; balanced connections become important over longer runs or in electrically noisy environments such as live stage setups.
